Today I’d like to discuss this Neale Donald Walsch quote because I believe more and more people need to implement this idea in their lives. I see people around me, who instead of trying new things and stepping out of their comfort zone, just sit still in the middle as their life passes by. The goal of this article is to convince the reader to think differently about the comfort zone and take the first step over its edge.
What is the comfort zone?
The comfort zone is a psychological state in which a person feels familiar, at ease, in control and experiences low anxiety and stress. To put it simply: it is the list of things we feel comfortable doing. Everything you don’t feel comfortable doing is out of your comfort zone.
The comfort zone is different for everyone. Some people feel fine founding companies or addressing the other sex and for some the leaving the house is already a step too far. But why? It is about the mindset, but there are numerous factors that will affect this, here’s a few.
Stepping out of the comfort zone is often prevented by fear. This fear can be fear of failure, fear of the unknown or fear of a challenge. This fear often comes from faulty assumptions based on previous bad experiences or from the upbringing.
Here’s an example: 4-year-old Jimmy messes up a song at his recorder recital. The other kids laugh at him until he starts crying. For the rest of the life creating music will be out of Jimmy’s comfort zone because of this bad experience. Did Jimmy come to a logical conclusion? I think not. But he will be afraid of failure in front of an audience and he’ll never touch an instrument.
The smallest comfort zone
I think we all know someone who’s safe zone is his or her home and the threshold is the edge. This is probably an elder person, who’s been living in the same house or apartment for 20-40 years. This person stopped experiencing new things after the children left the house. With time, the comfort zone will shrink and it won’t stop until only the daily basics are inside and everything else is over the edge.
As I mentioned in my previous article Is challenge a good thing? there is no improvement without stepping out of your comfort zone. The best way to make the first step over its edge is to understand and crush your limiting beliefs and challenge yourself often. It will become easier over time to be outside of the comfort zone and widen it. I’m planning to write a comprehensive article on how to get out of the comfort zone, so if you are interested in that, make sure the get notified when it is out and sign up for the newsletter at the end of the article.
