Everybody has dreams, but not everyone has goals. A lot of people don’t even know the difference between the two, and this may represent the situation where they ended up in life very well. I want to clarify this. With this article, I want to make you understand that dreams are not goals and how to turn your dreams into goals that you can actually work on.
Dreams are called dreams for a reason. Dreams as “life goals” are very similars to the dreams that we have while we are sleeping. They are both incorporeal, elusive and unreal. No matter how vivid they look, they are not part of our reality. But how do we make them part of our reality? This is where goal setting comes in.
The difference between dreams and goals is design.
This may sound harsh, but while you don’t have a plan, you don’t have a goal either. As I mentioned in my article Planning your future starts with you everything starts with planning. This thought is as evergreen as it can be. It applies to building a bridge, going on vacation and it applies here. To turn a dream into a goal, you have to set it right and come up with the next step you can do to start moving towards achieving it. To make sure you come up with a well-defined goal use the Goal Setting Done Right Infographic, it has more than the essentials.
If you think planning is hard or you feel uncertain about it, I have good news for you. You don’t have to come up with the whole plan. You only need to see a few steps ahead. Try to think small for the first steps as these can be the most intimidating. What steps are you able to do tomorrow, so at the end of the day you’ll feel like you made progress? Think about it, right now and write it down on a piece of paper. As you take step by step, you’ll have to come up new sections of your plan, but remember you only need to see a few steps ahead.
While you are planning a small part of your dream will manifest and become reality. There it is, in your hand, on the paper. You can feel it, hold it, see it. It’s the plan, your dreams recipe. Keep working on it and you’ll make the whole a part of your life. Step by step, day by day.
“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
